This month marks the 2nd anniversary of this blog, the first of many. When I started it was to try out this new medium for a client so rather than learn on her time, I learnt on mine, exploring the blogosphere, joining communities and commenting on other people’s blogs. It was several months before I really ‘got it’ and understood what blogging was about – by then I was hooked. I started up a family blog several months after this one to replace the annual family Christmas newsletter and started getting comments from people I didn’t know because of posts about my cats. But up till that stage I really didn’t understand why anyone would want more than one or two blogs – one business, one personal.
Ha! These days I own 10 blogs and contribute to many others. What I did discover was that blogs work best when they are theme oriented and they are also great for those who love to write *put my hand up here*. Consequently I was always finding another theme I wanted to write on. I went from thinking ‘I could write an article on something’ to ‘I could write a series of articles on something’ and it just went from there.
You’ll find my blogs listed underneath the blogroll on the right and many can be subscribed to. I have shifted all but one from Blogger to my own server and my preferred blogging software is WordPress these days. For those who are still learning about this medium, you can register with WordPress.com for a free hosted blog or go to WordPress.org for information to host a blog on your own webserver – this has been my preference as it means I can modify and make changes to the templates.
Of course, as a VA, learning about this writing tool means I have been able to add this to my list of services. These days I am also a webhost and web designer and have been able to set up blogs for clients and help advise them on how to use blogs. So all the learning and experimenting means I’ve also been able to add to my professional portfolio.
Whilst I wouldn’t yet consider myself an expert on blogging, I do consider myself to amonst the more experienced bloggers and welcome your comments and questions. I also moderate a blogging forum at yahoogroups and you’re most welcome to join the members there for discussions. KMT
