Troubleshooting Software

The other day my husband was having a challenge with an update of software on his computer. Normally he can sort out software problems as he spends his work days working with the technical side of software design but this particular one was proving troublesome. The help files on the provider’s site was not useful at all and so I suggested that he check to see if there was a chat forum somewhere related to the software, or the hardware that the software was being used for.

He did that – and frequented the chat forums for both the software and the related piece of hardware and found that heaps of other people were experiencing the same problem. He was not alone. And the software writers and the hardware providers have not, as yet, come up with a solution – very frustrating. However, that is not the point of this post.

The point is that seeking out chat forums for software problems is a great way to ascertain whether you are the only person with a problem and if someone else has experienced the same, you might learn how to resolve the issue. Many VAs will be familiar with VA networks and chat forums, but it might not have occurred to them to seek out similar when needing to learn how software programs work, or to troubleshoot a computer problem. Just something else that will help you learn more about the equipment you use! KMT
