Great post. Back Up strategies make for fantastic new years resolutions. In addition, I propose a good server scrubbing. Both yours and your clients. I refer to it as business house keeping. Dirty servers lead to multitudes of problems.

In the spirit backing up your data, marketingforvas.com is hosting a raffle for new subscribers. 1 year subscription to Carbonite online backup for free. A winner will be selected on Jan 15th 2010.

Typing 2010 just feels weird in so many ways.

Of couse Terence and I'm forgetting that no-one will know what kind of backup system I have. Mine purely operates as a direct copy and not an encrypted copy so I can work straight from the hard drive, laptop or my online backup copy without having to worry about restoring first. But for those who do have backup files that are compressed or encrypted they do need to be sure that the restore function does work - before it's needed.

With respect Kathie it is not enough to check that the backups are taking place.

You need to check, regularly, that you can restore from them.
