Have you been missing Facebook? Many of us haven't had access to it for close to 24 hours - it's been down. So has Instagram for that matter. Now, that's all well and good, it's only a social media tool, right? Wrong! Many use it for marketing. But what if that is your ONLY form of marketing, or networking, or connecting with potential and current clients? You're basically stuffed - or, at least, your business is put on hold. This is a good example of why you should not depend on one … [Read more...]
Two accounts on Facebook?
I get amazed that people don't check into things like Terms of Service instead of making assumptions or taking the advice of others who probably don't know either. I want to set the record straight. You can only have ONE account on Facebook. Further, that account has to be in your real name - see item 3 under your commitments in the link above for having an account. For your benefit here: item 3.1 states: Who can use Facebook When people stand behind their opinions … [Read more...]
Facebook – profile or page?
Is your Facebook profile set up in your personal name or your business name? I want to give a warning as two people I know here in Melbourne, Australia, in the past week had their Facebook accounts suspended and they had to prove who they were. One was using a nickname coupled with his real name and the other was using a business name, instead of their personal name. Both had to change their profiles back to their personal names only and had the inconvenience of their accounts inactive for a few … [Read more...]
Business profile or page?
That is the question! However, if you are a business who has set up a profile at Facebook, rather than a page, you are in danger of having it shut down! How do you know the difference? The quickest way to tell is whether people have to click on 'add friend' to be connected to you, or whether they can just click on 'like' to follow your page. If the latter, then you're ok, but if the former, you're not. What happens if you've built up a large friend base and suddenly Facebook shuts your profile … [Read more...]
Do you have a Facebook profile?
If you have a Facebook account, and are in business, it would make sense to ensure that your business details are listed in your About tab. It amazes me that so many do not have their business websites linked in the About tab on their personal profiles at Facebook. If you have your privacy settings on, people won't be able to see your other details but they will be able to see what is in the About tab. So it makes sense to make use of that piece of real estate. If you're a member of a group … [Read more...]
Profile or Page when using Facebook?
I know people get confused about what the difference is when creating an account with Facebook. They hear they need to get a Facebook Page for their business but then, in setting up, get confused as to which is which and what the differences are. If you plan to use Facebook for your business, then you must set up a Page, not a Profile. The two most immediate differences are this: Adding someone as a 'Friend' or allowing people to 'Like your Page'. If you use a personal profile for your … [Read more...]
The Faceless People at LinkedIn
Social and business networks offer the opportunity for people to show their faces online when connecting with others. Which is why they have a place for uploading your photo. On social networks people often use images of their pets, favourite artists or their kids but when it comes to something relating to their business I really do believe they should be using their own photos. There are some who say they think their photo would get in the way of others doing business with them but I do … [Read more...]
The etiquette of posting on Facebook page walls
I logged into my business page last week and was surprised with a promotion for a service by someone else that I hadn't put on my wall. What disgruntled me was that I also provide that same service (Wordpress Training) and I thought that person had a cheek promoting on my wall to all my likers about their services. I reported it as spam and removed the post. I had tried to leave a comment on their wall however because they were an individual posting and not from a business page, and I hadn't … [Read more...]
Using Facebook for business
As many business owner/operators have done, I've turned to Facebook for networking opportunities. When I first started using Facebook a few years ago I set up two profiles - one for personal use and one for business. I didn't want to confuse personal stuff with business stuff and really didn't want my business contacts seeing what various members of my family were chatting about. For me, that made sense to do. However, Facebook has in their Terms of Use that you should really only have the … [Read more...]
