For a long time I was an advocate for the desktop, and only took my laptop to client meetings (very occasionally) or when my husband and I would go away on holidays. Not so I could do work, but so I could store photos that I take during our time away. Outside of work I’m a keen photographer.
I was very conscious of the need to be ergonomically set up for good posture and health in my office, probably because I spend even more time there than I would have in a corporate office. But times are changing. My husband uses a laptop all the time. He has two, one for home and the other is his work one, so he can work part-time at home and part-time at work. And when he’s not using one of those he’s on his ipad, in front of the TV or even in bed at night, or the mornings when he doesn’t have to get up for work, i.e. the weekends. He can read the news on it amongst other things. Kind of a version of reading the paper in bed.
So, I finally decided to buy a new laptop. My other one, a Benq, has served me well but is over 12 years old and very slow. It takes quite awhile to fire up so I haven’t been taking it to client meetings. I was wanting to sit in front of the TV like hubby, and play on my computer, but in my case it’s chatting on Facebook or forums. I bought an ASUS just before the end of the financial year and am beginning to use it a fair bit, now I have it set up how I want it. I must admit having the freedom to move out of the office is beginning to appeal. I’ve never really bothered about it in the past but perhaps my newer surroundings are enticing me to enjoy them a lot more… weather permitting.
What about you? Do you use a desktop, laptop or both? I have a poll here if you’d like to participate.
