This is a discussion I’ve seen at a couple of VA forums and I thought I’d bring it here to share with you.
My first client came through my church in 1994. He needed some typing to be done. My second was through a lady I knew at the time – she was working with an NFP that needed admin support. From there more referrals came in and that’s how much of my business was built pre-internet. I still believe in face-to-face networking very much today. A lot of referrals still come that way. And no, neither of those clients are with me today. My longest running client found my business card at a breakfast business network and she rang me to find out if I was competition to her service. I wasn’t and she engaged me for over 12 years. My second-longest client found me in the Yellow Pages the first year I put in an advert. He stayed with me for just over 10 years, till he retired. So I had both of them at the same time for many years. Other clients have come via church groups, business networking groups, and my own newsletter which was passed on to people. Today, of course, people find me via the web and social media as well.
